Video: Investigating microtubules and motor proteins

The lab of Puck Ohi, Ph.D., at the LSI investigates how motor proteins organize microtubules into complex structures within the cell. These structures have roles in everything from the formation of neurons, to cell division, to overgrowth of cancer.

In this video, Ohi describes his lab’s recent findings about one specific motor protein — HSET (for human minus-end-directed kinesin-14) — and how it acts on microtubules to form these structures. The mechanism by which this protein works has important implications for chemotherapeutic approaches to targeting cancer.
