From Aspiring to Aspirnaut

U-M program connects future scientists to the lab, the university and their goals

As a high school sophomore, Diogenes Lopez-Urioso had already set his sights on attending the University of Michigan. Inwardly, though, he thought he had almost no chance of getting into his first-choice school — that is, until he became an Aspirnaut.

The Aspirnaut program at the University of Michigan brings students from across Michigan to Ann Arbor, where they immerse themselves in the role of researchers at the Life Sciences Institute while living on campus and learning about college life.

Now settled in his dorm as a freshman at U-M, Lopez-Urioso credits the program with helping him find his place as a member of the University of Michigan Class of 2024.
