AI-powered behavior analysis with LabGym: 2026 Symposium and Tutorial

Learn how to use LabGym, an AI-based software suite for automated video analysis and quantification of animal behavior.

LabGym is a free software suite for automated video analysis and quantification of animal behavior. It has now been downloaded over 73,000 times from GitHub. The 2024 and 2025 Symposia each attracted over 150 registrants from 50 institutions across 5 and 11 countries, respectively.

The 2026 symposium will be held virtually via Zoom and will feature two sessions:

Morning session (9:00–11:00 a.m. EST): 

An introduction and overview of LabGym, followed by presentations from researchers highlighting new features of LabGym and showcasing diverse applications across a wide range of species, including mice, rats, planarians, macaques and lions.

Research Talks: 

  • Wenjin Dong (University of Michigan): LabGrymace: Automated analysis of mouse grimace for quantitative assessment of pain dynamics
  • Lauren Raycraft (University of Michigan): Hungry for more: Behavioral analysis with LabGym reveals new insights in cue-induced food-seeking
  • Jay Vargas (California State University Los Angeles): Teaching Old Worms New Tricks: AI-Assisted Behavioral Analysis in Planarians
  • Frej Gammelgård (Aalborg University, Denmark): Using LabGym for a full-scale and generalized behavioral analysis in captive lions

New Features and Tools 

  • Elvis Xiang: A Zero-shot segmentation tool for generating training data for the LabGym Detector
  • Alexander Chumak: Diagnosing LabGym Categorizer errors: An interactive confusion matrix and triage workflow
  • Alisa Ficiciyan: Enhancing the LabGym user experience: Integrated resources, an interactive workflow map, and behavior count monitoring
  • Myra Lyu: Enhancing behavioral quantification in LabGym with confidence and behavioral transition analysis

Tutorial Session (11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. EST): 

A step-by-step introduction to LabGym's core functions to help new users begin using LabGym. Example videos and datasets will be provided to allow hands-on practice.

Who Should Attend

This symposium is open to anyone interested in AI-assisted behavioral analysis, including researchers, including faculty, postdocs, students, technicians, veterinarians, zookeepers, wildlife biologists, and members of the general public. No prior experience with automated behavioral analysis is required, and programming knowledge is not necessary to use LabGym.
