Diabetes: Developing a new drug to treat Type 2 diabetes
Tens of millions of Americans must face living with Type 2 diabetes, while millions more are yet to be diagnosed. The Saltiel lab is close to finding an inhibitor of the IKKE gene, which they discovered when deleted in mouse models, blocks the inflammation that leads to diabetes. Their findings on the links between inflammation and diabetes resulted in the creation of a spin-off of a company, Vega Therapeutics, which will focus on this area.
“...the Innovation Partnership...can take forward projects such as this, that could result in the discovery of a drug to combat obesity, diabetes, fatty liver, and other associated problems.”
—Dr. Alan Saltiel
