Collaborative Scientific Discovery

The U-M Life Sciences Institute brings together outstanding scientists in a collaborative environment. Cutting edge research tools, a unique open laboratory facility and professional staff support enable interdisciplinary teams to address biomedical challenges in human health. LSI laboratories are leaders in chemical biology, signal transduction, RNAi, structural biology and genetics of disease. Some illustrative areas of active research are:

  • EXPANDING FRONTIERS IN STEM CELL BIOLOGY - Combining the talents of biologists, geneticists, and informatics specialists to map the ethnic diversity of existing human stem cell lines. The outcomes of this research will improve the effectiveness of stem cell research for all groups in society.
  • MOLECULAR INSIGHTS INTO DISEASE - Incorporating biophysics, chemistry, biology and molecular imaging, LSI labs are dissecting the regulation of biological systems through the dynamic assembly and action of macromolecular protein complexes. Understanding these processes will impact fundamental inquiries about cell physiology and generate new therapeutic approaches to disease.
  • MARINE MOLECULES TO MEDICINE - Creating libraries of new natural compounds from marine invertebrates and algae for use in early stage drug discovery
