SMITH LAB

Smith Lab

Nearly all genes encode proteins, which perform almost all of the chemical and regulatory tasks of living systems. The genome sequence of an organism identifies its “toolkit” of proteins and their amino acid sequences, but it does not reveal the three-dimensional fold that is most informative about the function of each protein. The Smith lab studies the molecular mechanisms of proteins by determining three-dimensional structures.
