William Clay Brown, PhD

Dr. Brown is the Scientific Director of the High-Throughput Protein Lab in the Life Sciences Institute. He joined the Center for Structural Biology in December of 2006 and brings with him a wealth of industrial experience.

He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Wayne State University while studying Bacteriophage T7 DNA replication proteins with Dr. Louis Romano. He then did post-doctoral work at the California Institute of Technology investigating DNA replication in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae with Dr. Judith Campbell, followed by a position in the Bacterial Expression Dept. at biotechnology company AMGEN where he developed systems for heterologous gene expression in E. coli. He later established an insect cell expression facility to support the development of small molecule drug discovery at AMGEN. Most recently he was the head of the Expression Technologies group at Pfizer in Ann Arbor. This group provided proteins produced in bacterial, insect and mammalian systems to support target validation, high-throughput screening, specificity screening and structural biology.
