Johanna Buchstaller, Life Sciences Institute Research Fellow, gets award from Children’s Tumor Foundation for work on neurofibromatosis.
In her lab on the fifth floor of the Life Sciences Institute, Johanna Buchstaller studies tumor tissue slides on a typical day. The postdoctoral research fellow’s mission is to find improved treatments for neurofibromatosis (NF), which in severe cases causes disfigurement that has been compared to Elephant Man’s disease. Pete Dingeman presented U-M with $31,000 to aid research to aid the neurofibromatosis research being conducted by Johanna Buchstaller. Learn more
LSI faculty member and U-M Center for Stem Cell Biology Director Sean Morrison awarded $50,000 Grant
April 4, 2009 -- LSI faculty member and Director of the U-M Center for Stem Cell Biology, Dr. Sean Morrison, received a $50,000 grant from The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative to study a specific type of malignant tumor related to the disease Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). NF1 is a condition, marked most commonly by the formation of benign tumors throughout the peripheral nervous system that affects approximately 1 in every 4,000 people. Learn more
New embryonic stem cell lab launched with support from UM Center for Stem Cell Biology and the LSI
March 9, 2009 - The U-M announced today the formation of a consortium to create new embryonic stem cell lines that will aid the search for disease treatments and cures. The A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute Consortium for Stem Cell Therapies, supported in part by the U-M Center for Stem Cell Biology and the LSI, is the first major embryonic stem cell research program launched in Michigan since the Nov. 4 passage of a state constitutional amendment allowing scientists to create new stem cell lines using surplus embryos from fertility clinics. LSI Faculty member Ivan Maillard to share Damon Runyon Foundation award with fellow U-M cancer researcher
January 22, 2009 - Life Sciences Institute researcher Dr. Ivan Maillard and Dr. Yi Zhang of the U-M Medical School will share a $450,000 Innovation Award from the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. Maillard and Zhang will look for novel ways to make bone marrow transplants safer and more widely available. Learn more
U-M scientists plan stem cell research as new state law goes into effect
December 19, 2008 - A new state law goes into effect today that enables U-M stem cell scientists to derive new embryonic stem cell lines, using proceudres already employed in laboratories around the world. U-M scientists are already busy planning projects that could lead to new treatments for inherited diseases. Learn more

Yamashita named Searle Scholar
June 1, 2008 - Yukiko Yamashita, Life Sciences Institute Reseach Assistant Professor, member of the University of Michigan Center for Stem Cell Biology, and Assistant Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan Medical School, was named a Searle Scholar. Learn more
Gift launches fund to support stem cell research at University of Michigan
February 18, 2008 - The University of Michigan Medical School and the Center for Stem Cell Biology have received a significant gift to fund broader opportunities for stem cell research at U-M. The Robert and Marge Alpern Stem Cell Research Fund is designed to encourage both embryonic and tissue-specific (adult) stem cell research by offering researchers university-wide an additional resource for studies in this fast-growing field.

'U' scientists welcome stem cell ban repeal
October 17, 2007 - The Center for Stem Cell Biology is featured in a discussion of stem cell legislation in today's Michigan Daily. From the article:
A ballot proposal committee formed at the beginning of October is aiming to overturn the ban on embryonic stem cell research in Michigan. That would be a welcome change for University researchers who say the law hinders on the development of medical cures.
